Alcyona Mick

Alcyona started playing piano at the age of 3. Growing up surrounded by an eclectic mix of her family's musical tastes including a wide range of world music, she trained as a classical pianist for many years. A love for composing and improvising developed early on and she studied jazz piano at  Birmingham Conservatoire and the Royal Academy of Music.

Alcyona's debut album 'Around the Sun' (Audio-b records) won the Promoter's Choice award 2007 and was nominated for a Parliamentary Jazz award. Her second album 'Blink' was co-released on Loop Records and has also met with critical acclaim.

As a composer she has received many commissions to write for and perform live to silent film including a recent Arts council supported new score for the historical masterpiece 'Sunrise'. She has recently graduated with an MA in composing music for film at the prestigious National Film and Television School and has now written and produced a wide range of music for short films, documentaries and animations made at the NFTS.

Alcyona has performed nationally and internationally with many fantastic musicians, working regularly with world renowned artists such as percussionist Paul Clarvis and Arabic singer Natacha Atlas. Her co-lead trio Blink, who are part of London's Loop Collective, will be releasing a new double album 'Twice' in 2011.
