D6 welcomes new band Stills
April 9, 2013
New London band Stills release their debut EP in June 2013 through new label Recreation Records. The band have signed a publishing deal with District 6.
Felix and Andree got together in 2011 whilst at Saint Martins college of Art. Tired of the endless stream of guitar bands he had been playing in, Felix decided to form a hybrid band – think Massive Attack meets Magnetic Man - free of the constraints of a typical band line up and free to concentrate on his array of analogue synths. Andree had been studying at St Martins alongside Tom Vek, and developed her song writing talents to match Felix’s musicianship and production skills.
The band's first single, Ur Mine was remixed by Groove Armada. The following single, Rain featured backing vocals by Saint Saviour.
Following much press buzz and features in Mixmag and Music Week the band played the NME awards after show party this year – opening for Django Django and Palma Violets & have been added to this years Standon Calling festival alongside AlunaGeorge, Bastille and De La Soul.
Demarrage District 6 France
19 Février, 2013
Démarrage District 6 France.
Some 12 - 18 months in its gestation (you have got to love french bureaucracy), and our sister company District 6 France is now officially up, running and making waves across the channel.
Headed up by Frantz Steinbach & David Bossan (see contact tab for details), D6F is not only responsible for the administration and exploitation of the D6UK catalogue, but is a standalone, independent company signing domestic artists / writers and repertoire and exploiting new opportunities in France, Europe and beyond.
Following the signing of writer / producer Sebastian Moreau last year (currently co-writing with Philippe Katerine and Shaka Ponk), D6F have this week signed french band You and You's debut album Keep It Safe to PIAS.
Early March will see a mini-writer camp between D6F and Talpa writers concentrating on writing songs for finalists of the french edition of The Voice and for french domestic artists.
Bienvenue, D6F !
District 6 artists vie for highest new entry spot
January 09, 2013
District 6 artists Donae'o and Baby Blue are vying for this weeks highest new entry on the UK chart. The two collaborated in 2012 on Baby Blue's "Play", and now go head-to-head for chart success. Both are playlisted at BBC Radio 1.
Donae'o's "Not A Saint", with Vato Gonzalez & Lethal Bizzle currently holds the highest new entry spot in the mid-weeks. With over 4 million youtube hits and approaching 6000 downloads this week, Donae'o appears to have the upper hand.
But Baby Blue, who features on Matrix And Futurebound's "Magnetic Eyes" (released last week), is enjoying a late surge and strong daytime support from all Radio 1 DJs. Who's it going to be ?
Murcof joins District 6
November 19, 2012
Murcof, the performing and recording name of Mexican electronica artist Fernando Corona, has joined District 6 Music Publishing in a catalogue deal that includes all of his albums to date.
Corona, born in Tijuana in 1970, was primarily known as a member of Mexico’s celebrated and grammy nominated Nortec (“Norteño-Techno”) Collective before his first LP as Murcof, Martes, a masterpiece of contemporary electronic music was released in 2002 by The Leaf label.
His revolutionary work as Murcof has seen him recontextualising the work of his beloved European contemporary classical composers (including the likes of Arvo Pärt, Henryk Górecki and Giya Kancheli) within minimal electronic structures. It’s a trick that others have tried to pull off, but none with Corona’s lightness of touch, or widespread appeal.
Influenced mainly, though not exclusively, by classical and electronic minimalism, Murcof works with orchestral string samples, microscopically detailed textures, sounds and rhythms. And although founded on abstract, glitchy, sometimes complex electronic percussion, Murcof's recordings are more melodic and traditionally structured than many contemporary electronic musicians. Lush atmospheric layers of strings and piano restrained by poised micro-rhythms, his music hovers with effortless grace, intimating untold, unapologetically spiritual depths.
New Transformer Campaign
October 4, 2012
Featured in the hugely popular, groundbreaking first series of The Inbetweeners "Cinema Car" gave Transformer an early taste of success and live TV exposure. As the band continue to play live shows they are now busy preparing for the release of their new single, "Dragonfly", to be released this autumn, and then a second, "Government", planned for release at the start of 2013, before an EP is due for next spring/early-summer.
Brighton-based live dance trio, Transformer have quickly gained a reputation for firing live shows that combine heavy dance music grooves with a raw energy. Garry Mulholland of Q Magazine describes their live performances thus - “...dapper disco mavericks...The only British band capable of turning any venue they play into a dream version of The Danceteria in 1979.”
Over the last few years they have played alongside artists and DJs such as Peaches, Erol Alkan, Hot Chip, Friendly Fires, Foals, Cut Copy, Andrew Wetherall, Shit Robot and Holy Fuck in clubs, venues and festivals across the UK and Europe.
".. billed as "the best unsigned band in Brighton", they might as well be native New Yorkers.. the likes of "Coconut" and "Cinema Car" use an agitated singer, rubber synth loops, hypnotic bass lines, repetitive post-punk guitar attacks and an even a trumpet to get this party started."
Baby Blue signs to 3 Beat Music
September 3, 2012
Baby Blue, the UK’s pre-eminent female MC has signed to 3 Beat Music, joining the label’s impressive roster alongside the likes of Sway, Martin Solveig, Skepta, Alexandra Stan and Jodie Connor.
District 6 is proud to confirm the deal, which has been struck in time to include her latest single, “Target” (playlisted at 1xtra) to kick off the label’s campaign, with a second single already slated for October. More of which later …
Blue, as she is affectionately known, is no stranger to success, having previously written and toured with fellow UK artist Estelle. They co-wrote the song 'Hey Girl' featuring John Legend, as well as another track for Estelle's debut album 'The 18th Day,' and she featured in the video for the hit '1980.'
Now she will do it by herself, and all parties to the deal are in no doubt that 2012/3 will bring a whole new fanbase and solo chart success.
